Lee, I feel honored to be the first person to comment on your site. I found this link by accident, but I have already bookmarked it.

As a KU journalism grad ('88), I appreciate the information and commentary you're bringing. If I can ever help or contribute any content, just let me know.

As I can see, the rating system is not your own, but Coach Polk. I've never seen this before, but it covers everything pretty well.

Just wondering, points are given for assisting a double play, but not for one that's unassisted.

Funny I see drawing a walk is worth the same as getting hit by a pitch. I bet Don Baylor would say a HBP should be worth more :)

Odd thing about that is it takes skill and plate discipline to draw a walk. It just takes luck and maybe slow reflexes to get beaned by a pitch.

Keep up the good work. I hope more and more people find your website.

We've got your comment in the wrong place so it took me awhile to find it. Hope you get a chance to see my response.

As for contributing content: I hope all the readers will. I'm not the only guy with an opinion and if you have a question for me or a player I'll try to get it answered.

We picked Ron Polk's system, not because we thought it was perfect, but because it was a good way to start thinking about 'inside baseball' and the fact that it was put together by a coach with his credentials didn't hurt. I thought it was an interesting look inside the mind of a very successful coach and would help us see the game through his eyes.

There has been quibbling about the points awarded. The players I talked to don't care about points, they like seeing the patterns: who makes mental mistakes, who runs the bases well and so on.

I asked Coach Polk about the double play points and he said he was rewarding good footwork and ball handling which is why the first baseman doesn't get any points unless he started the play.

Coach Polk told me to score it anyway I wanted, but to stay consistent about how I did it, so I'm giving guys a point for an unassisted dp (catching a line drive and having the game awareness to go step on a bag, etc.).

As for getting hit by a pitch: you've got a point...or two. I've been hit so hard in the ribs I thought they ought to give me first AND second...and you're right, being too slow to get out of the way helps, but having the guts not to try ought to get you something.

Spread the word on the site, the more people look at it, the better chance it has of surviving.
